We had traveled about 200 yards when Roxy stopped and turned head and ears to the hill north of us. I saw nothing at first. Then, I saw a black spot under a low sage bush. Looked like a shadow. I remember that Jim said the little guy had a white spot on the face. I urged Roxy forward a few steps. She kept her eye on that bush. WOW! I see the white spot. I walked Roxy over to the bush and dismounted and tried to get the little one on her feet. The heat of the day was too much and she could not stand on her own.

I picked her up and carried her to the pen.

None of the cows would accept her so I put her in a shady spot till her ride came.

A good horse will help find the lost and weak.

     People of the Yampa

As the sun came up over the mountains, all eyes were on it. All stood facing the east with their left arms raised toward the sun. Today all the hunters will give thanks for the new day and the gift of the buffalo.  After the hands came down, all eyes turned to the great beast on the prairie in front of them. Slowly the men began moving to their left until there was a circle of slowly moving men around the buffalo. As the men made the circle smaller, they sang to the buffalo. They sang songs of praise and thanks. Soon the men were very close, and the beast, not knowing where to go, found himself trapped. There was no opening. With a signal from the hunt leader, all charged, and drove their spears deep into the body of the great beast.

From the hill across the river came a great sound. All of the people in the camp were watching the drama unfold before them.

The beast tried to defend itself, but his time had passed.  In his struggle for life, he did manage to mortally wound a young man. The beast had not stopped kicking when the men again circled the body and again gave thanks. The hunt leader put grass into the mouth of the gift from the MOTHER EARTH and GRANDFATHER SKY.
